Looking Back
John, Mike and Benny deJonge, new immigrants from Holland, began running Highland Packers in 1958, in Stoney Creek. Operating as a slaughterhouse to serve the many local cattle breeders, the Dutch brothers and Highland Packers soon earned a reputation as highly skilled, impeccably clean and extremely reliable.
Operating as a retail butcher shop, catering to the large European ethnic community, Highland Packers soon earned a reputation as genuine meat specialists. First class people who always provided the highest quality meat products, at a fair price.
- In the early 1920’s Marinus DeJonge and his wife Christina started a butcher shop in Holland in the village Breskens
- Family of 6 sons and 3 daughters
- In late 50’s 4 sons (John, Mike, Jack and Benny) moved to Canada and carried on the family tradition Fred stayed behind and carried on with the family butcher shop in Holland (Marinus’ father)
- Jack opened his own butcher shop in Grimsby
- John, Mike and Benny started Highland Packers
- In 1972, family shop in Holland was sold and family moved to Canada
- 2005 Marinus and Janneke (Fred, Nicholas, Janet, Edwin) took over Highland Meat Packers and Highland Country Market
- Working diligently towards the top standards of food production including training, continuous improvement (belief), customer driven
